The main problem with all those maps is that they are not easy to understand, most of them are not mobile-friendly, and I have never seen a map that can show your location on a resort. All these things make such schematics (or “maps”) very hard to use, especially when you visit a place for the first or second time.

Before I show you how to create an interactive ski/outdoor map with MakeMeMap (I will create an interactive map for the Morzine ski resort in France), let’s look at how a map on a resort website usually looks.

Yes, it looks fine visually, but it doesn’t solve the main goal of any map — to guide you around a place.

Why interactive ski maps created with MakeMeMap are much better than such schematics:

Visitors can see their real-time location, which helps a lot to understand how to get to a lift or slope and which direction to choose

Works really fast even on mobile and older devices because it’s a vector-based map

Looks good even on small devices with smooth, usable zoom

Has data about other places around, such as attractions, shops, restaurants, toilets, and parking spots, out of the box for most areas

Includes slope information by default for most ski resorts worldwide

Easy to customize, so no “schedule a call with our manager” is required to create, edit, and share a map

Free for small traffic and fully predictable pricing

Offline usage

Sounds great, right? However, Google locks you into My Maps forever.

Let’s assume you decide to switch to another map service with more features: unlimited categories, faster performance, mobile-friendly design, better map data, a service that doesn’t track everything about you and your users. You go to your map in Google My Maps, open the map menu, select Download KML, download the file with your places, upload it to another map service—and then you see that the new map shows only the place name, location, and icon. That’s it: no photos, no descriptions, not even the Google Place ID that you can see in Google My Maps.

This means you’re not able to export full information about your places from Google My Maps. You’re forced to continue using it or create a new map and manually copy all places one by one.

We used Google My Maps for years to collect different places, routes, and other location-based data because there was no real alternative. But about a year ago, we decided to build our own Google My Maps alternative for our own needs, because Google My Maps is no longer a reliable product: it hasn’t received updates in a long time and has many limitations.

After releasing the first version of MakeMeMap (our Google My Maps alternative) for internal use, we realized that other people could benefit from such a service, so we made it public. It’s free for up to 100 visitors (5 EUR up to 5000 visitors / month). It doesn’t collect any data about you or your users. It supports an unlimited number of categories, allows you to export all data from a map, and is fast and mobile-friendly. (The editor can currently be used only on screens wider than 780 px, but shared maps work on any screen, even on older devices.)

Just try it and you’ll see the difference. Create an account at makememap.com using your email and password, and you can start building your own maps right away.

Is there a way to automatically import data from Google My Maps?
Unfortunately, no. You can export your map from Google My Maps in KML or KMZ format and then import that file into MakeMeMap. However, when places were added via Google search, Google exports only the place name and coordinates. Other place information is not included unless it was manually added in Google My Maps. Any additional data—such as descriptions, text, or photos—must be added manually after import.

As always, we’re happy to answer questions and help with any issues related to our service. This means you are not compliant with GDPR and other privacy laws (even outside Europe) if you don’t first obtain permission from users to collect and share data with Google before displaying the map. Let me show you how this works with a real example.

Let’s assume you want to embed a map on your website using Google Maps. It’s a necessity. A good locator helps your customers find you faster, builds trust, and improves your visibility in search engines. In other words, it’s a smart move for your marketing and your growth.

In this article, I’ll explain why adding a map with pins to your website can directly support your local presence and your ability to attract nearby customers.

What Is a Store Locator?

A store locator is a map with clickable locations that shows where your business can be found. Each pin on the map can include extra information like:

The store or pick up point name

Address and opening hours

Links to pages or booking tools

Images or descriptions

Depending on the tool you use, you can also add categories, custom icons, or a search bar to help users filter what they’re looking for.

How a Store Locator Helps with Local SEO

When people search for products or services "near me" or in a specific city, search engines like Google try to show the most relevant results. If your website clearly shows where you operate - using structured location data and an embedded map - it’s more likely to show up in local search results.

That means:

More potential customers discovering your business

Better visibility for each of your locations

Higher chances of showing up on Google Maps or in the “Local Pack”

In simple terms, if someone searches for "ceramic studio in Brooklyn" and your site clearly shows you have a studio there, especially with a map, you’re more likely to appear in their results.

It's Not Just About Search, It's About User Experience

Beyond SEO, a store locator simply makes your website more helpful. People can:

Quickly see which location is closest to them

View key info without needing to call or search

Get directions instantly on mobile

This reduces friction and helps turn casual visitors into actual customers.

Who Can Benefit from a Store Locator?

Even if you don’t run a retail chain, you might still need a map with pins. For example:

Local brands with multiple stockists or pickup points

Artisans or food producers selling at markets and pop-ups

Studios and workshops offering services in several locations

Event organizers who host activities across a region

Tourism businesses highlighting points of interest

If your audience needs to go somewhere to experience or collect your product, then a store locator is a valuable tool.

How to Add One Without Coding

Many small businesses avoid adding a store locator because they think it’s too technical. But there are simple tools like MakeMeMap that let you:

Add pins manually in minutes

Include descriptions, links, and images

Customize the look and style to match your brand

Share the map with a link or embed it into your site

You don’t need a developer, plugins, or a complicated setup.

Adding a store locator to your website is one of the simplest ways to improve your local SEO and your customer experience at the same time. It helps people find you, understand your offering, and feel confident enough to visit or buy. Whether you run a single-person studio or a growing indie brand — a map with pins can make your business easier to discover.

Try it now with MakeMeMap.com and create a store locator your customers will love.

How to Make an Interactive Map for a Local Farmers Market (No Coding Needed)

Organizing a farmers market means managing a lot of moving parts - vendors, locations, schedules, and visitor information. You can create it in under 30 minutes - with no coding or design skills needed.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to build an interactive farmers market map step by step using a real example and a free map-making tool.

Why Your Market Needs a Map

An interactive map helps your market stand out and improves the visitor experience. It allows people to:

See where each vendor is located

Know what each stand offers (produce, honey, flowers, baked goods, etc.)

Plan their visit ahead of time

Share the map with friends or on social media

Reduce questions and confusion on the day of the event

For vendors, a clear map means more foot traffic and better visibility.

Real Example: Marché Bio des Batignolles (Paris, France)

This neighborhood farmers market in Paris features dozens of vendors spread along a small street. To make it easier for regulars and new visitors to explore, the organizers created a simple interactive map showing:

Stall numbers and vendor names

Icons for types of products (vegetables, cheese, bread, etc.)

Notes for seasonal or rotating vendors

Location of toilets, recycling bins, or nearby bike racks

It’s embedded on the market’s homepage and updated every season with a few clicks — no technical skills needed.

Step-by-Step: Build Your Own Farmers Market Map

1. Add Each Vendor or Stand

For each booth or participant, add a pin to the map with:

Vendor name

Description (what they sell, local certifications, specialties)

Optional: links to their website or Instagram

Optional: photo of their stand or products

You can use categories or color-coded pins — for example, one color for farmers, another for prepared foods, and another for crafts.

3. Customize the Look

Adjust the map’s color scheme to match your market branding or event theme. You can:

Change pin icons

Upload your market logo

Control the zoom level and layout

Add filters (e.g. “organic certified”, “vegan options”)

4. We’ve used Google Maps in different projects, including low-level API integrations, and eventually decided to build our own Embed Maps service for internal use. But you can use it as well.

Before introducing our project, MakeMeMap, let’s review the available Google Maps options for embedding maps on a website. This should help explain our motivation for creating a Google Embed Maps alternative.

How to Embed Google Maps

1. Google Embed Maps
The most popular option—but far from the best. It has two major drawbacks:

Privacy issues: Google automatically tracks your website visitors, which violates GDPR and basic privacy rules. Legally, you should ask users for consent before showing the map. Many websites skip this (for example, the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice, France), allowing Google to collect user data that it later monetizes. This is why the service is “free,” but you end up paying with your users’ privacy—and with the time required to set it up.

Limited functionality:

Only one pin allowed.

Google decides what else to display on the map (e.g., random restaurants, shops, or attractions).

Zero customization.

2. Google My Maps
Offers more features (multiple locations, simple directions, and more) but comes with serious downsides:

Outdated design and poor performance.

No updates in over 5 years.

No customization.

Still tracks visitors automatically.

3. Google Maps API
A developer-friendly platform for building fully custom map projects. However:

Unpredictable costs: Pricing is per usage. With high traffic—or a malicious bot attack—your invoice can reach thousands of dollars in days.

Requires significant development time and technical skills.

Why We Need an Alternative

Google only offers two extremes:

Simple but rigid tools (Embed Maps/My Maps) with no customization, limited features, and privacy issues.

Complex developer APIs that require time, skills, and come with unpredictable costs.

There’s no no-code, customizable, privacy-friendly, predictable-cost solution.

That’s why we created MakeMeMap—a service that combines:

No-code usability

Full customization

Privacy-first approach

Predictable, transparent pricing

You can add a MakeMeMap embed to any website, CMS, or platform with a simple HTML snippet in just minutes.

How to Add a Map

Go to makememap.com.

Create an account (no credit card required).

Create and customize your map.

Copy the link and add it to your website—or share it directly.

That’s it. No code. No technical knowledge required.

How to Create an Interactive Event Map for Your Next Event

Planning an event—whether it’s a festival, sports race, conference, or market—comes with one challenge every organizer faces: helping people find their way. That’s where a well-designed event map makes all the difference.

In this article, I’ll show you how to create your own interactive event map with multiple markers, routes, and custom shapes. We will use a case study from the Formula Grand Prix in Monaco and the service MakeMeMap, a tool designed to help you create, share, and embed interactive maps that work seamlessly on both desktop and mobile.

What Is an Interactive Event Map?

An interactive event map is a digital tool that displays the layout and locations of key features at your event, such as:

Entrances and exits

Seating zones and grandstands

Food and drink stalls

Emergency services

Exhibitor booths

Stages and activity zones

Routes and directions

Restrooms (WCs)

Unlike a static image, an interactive map allows users to zoom in, see their live location, click for details, and filter by category.

Do I Need a Map for My Event?

In short: Yes. A high-quality event map helps you:

Improve the attendee experience: Navigate with ease.

Reduce staff workload: Fewer repetitive questions for your team.

Prevent confusion and crowding: Streamline the flow of foot traffic.

Increase engagement: Keep visitors at your event areas longer.

Promote partners: Highlight vendors and sponsors via clickable points.

If your map is embeddable or shareable, it also helps build excitement and awareness before the event even begins.

Case Study: Formula Grand Prix in Monaco

Let’s look at the iconic Formula Grand Prix in Monaco. Organizers must communicate dozens of key locations across a dense city circuit. On their custom map, they include:

Grandstands: Specific seat numbers and access points.

Points of Interest: Landmarks and viewing spots.

Hospitality: VIP zones and lounges.

Track Layout: Pit lanes, paddocks, and the circuit itself.

An interactive map lets spectators explore the circuit layout ahead of time, locate their seats faster, and plan their race day efficiently.

How to Build Your Event Map

To build our map, we will use MakeMeMap. It allows you to create interactive maps with zero coding and includes a built-in CMS to manage places and routes easily.

Create an Account: Sign up at makememap.com. They offer a generous free plan and predictable pricing.

Add a New Map: Click the "+" icon to create a new map. You will then be redirected to the Map Editor.

Add Routes: For the Monaco example, we add two routes: the full track layout and the specific tunnel section.

Add Track Points: Mark turns and landmarks. To keep it organized, use the "Auto-numbering" feature in the category settings to label your turns automatically.

Define Seating Zones: Use custom shapes to draw grandstands and add text labels on top to guide visitors.

Final Details: Add markers with custom images to show the loop direction and the start/finish gates.

You can find more information about map features in our knowledge base at https://makememap.com/docs/overview. If you already write travel content, you’re halfway there. This guide will walk you through the exact steps to turn your knowledge into a product people are willing to pay for.

Step 1: Choose the Right Type of Travel Guide

Not all travel guides are created equal. Start by choosing a format that aligns with your expertise and your readers’ interests:

Destination-specific (e.g., "A Local’s Guide to Lisbon")

Thematic (e.g., "Europe for Solo Female Travelers")

Budget-focused (e.g., "7 Days in Japan Under $500")

Experience-based (e.g., "Cultural Immersion in Oaxaca")

Check what’s selling on Amazon or Gumroad and study what’s missing in your niche.

Step 2: Identify Your Unique Angle

Thousands of guides exist, so what’s your unique value? Think about:

What do you know better than most?

What do readers frequently ask in your comments or emails?

What’s the personal perspective you bring?

This is your selling point.

Step 3: Research What Already Exists

Search Google, Amazon and Etsy for similar guides. Look at:

Content structure

Length and depth

Price point

User reviews (especially complaints)

Your job is to offer something better, clearer, or more specific.

Step 4: Outline the Content

Structure is everything. A basic travel guide outline might include:

Introduction / Why this guide is different

Essential travel tips (visas, transport, money, safety)

Day-by-day itineraries

Food and accommodation recommendations

Insider tips / local customs

Resources (apps, websites, maps)

Use your blog analytics to identify popular topics and make sure to include them.

Step 5: Write and Reuse Blog Content Wisely

You don’t have to start from scratch. Pull together:

Your most helpful blog posts

Comments and feedback from your readers

Instagram captions with practical advice

Repurpose this into more polished, structured, and value-packed content.

Step 6: Add an Interactive Map

Including a custom map with all the locations mentioned in your guide greatly improves its value. It makes the guide more actionable and easier to follow for your readers.

Here are a few tools you can use:

Google My Maps – Add custom pins, layers, and descriptions for free

MakeMyMap – Easy-to-use map tool for creating custom itineraries

Atlist – Create stylish interactive maps with categories and embed options

MapHub – Collaborative and minimalist map tool

You can embed the map in your blog, link to it in your guide, or offer it as a bonus resource.

Step 7: Design and Format for Digital Sale

Use free tools like Canva, Designrr, or Google Docs + PDF export

Keep layout clean and scannable

Add original photos, maps, and links

Make it mobile-friendly

You can sell your guide in PDF format, or use platforms like Etsy, Gumroad, Payhip, or Shopify.

Step 8: Price It Right

Check what similar products charge. Typically:

Short weekend guides: $5–9

In-depth country guides: $15–25

Offer launch discounts to your mailing list and blog readers.

Step 9: Create a Landing Page

Build a simple sales page using:

Clear headline

What’s inside the guide

3–5 bullet points of benefits

Screenshots or sample pages

Testimonials (even from beta readers)

Call-to-action button (Buy Now)

Use your blog to funnel traffic to this page.

Step 10: Promote via Blog, Email & Social

Write related blog posts and link to your guide

Offer a free sample chapter in exchange for emails

Use Pinterest pins and Instagram Stories

Create a dedicated "Start Here" page on your blog

Consistency is key — promote it regularly, not just once.

Bonus: Bundle & Upsell

Sell itineraries as separate products

Bundle city guides into a regional pack

Offer coaching or custom planning as a premium option

Creating a travel guide might seem like a big task, but it’s manageable — especially when you repurpose content you already have. Most importantly, it’s a product that keeps working for you long after it’s published.

Start simple. Launch it. Learn. In this guide, we'll show you how it works.

2. Google My Maps

You can check out the details and limitations of this option in my previous guide.

3. Google Maps Embed API

This is a very limited option. It only allows you to embed existing maps from Google Maps—you can't add custom pins or styles. Think of it as simply embedding https://maps.google.com into your site.

How to Add a Google Map Using the Google Maps API

By default, using the Google Maps API requires you to develop the map yourself. However, there are tools like Make Me Map that let you create an interactive map without coding—just by entering your API key.

⚠️ Important: The Google Maps API is usage-based, so you'll be charged based on how many times your map is viewed. These costs can add up quickly. Later in this guide, we’ll also look at a free and predictable alternative (max $25/month).

Using Google Maps API with Make Me Map

We’ll combine the power of the Google Maps API (for map tiles and data) with the simplicity of Make Me Map (for rendering and customization).

Alternatively, you can use Make Me Map without Google Maps—using OpenStreetMap as a free and flexible map data provider. One of the biggest advantages of Make Me Map is that you can switch between data providers without rebuilding your map, making it future-proof.

Steps to Add Google Maps to Your Website:

Create an account at makememap.com

In your account, click "New Map"

In the Map Settings (right-side tab), set Map Data Provider to Google Maps

Create a Google Maps API key (specifically, a Maps Tile API key) in your Google Cloud Console

Paste the Google Maps API key into Make Me Map

If the key is valid, the map will load. In this blog post, I’ll show you how to do it without using external plugins, creating API keys, or dealing with any complex setup. You have two easy options:

Add an interactive map – just insert one line of HTML code.

Add a static image of a map with an active link – when users click on it, the map opens in a new browser tab. This method doesn't require adding HTML.

No matter which option you choose, you can create your map using Make Me Map. Here's how to do it (it's completely free for sites with small to medium traffic):

Go to makememap.com and create an account if you don’t have one yet.

In your account, click the “New Map” button.

Choose your preferred map style.

Add locations, overlays, and adjust other settings as needed.

Click “Publish” and copy either the HTML code or the image URL.

Paste the HTML code or add the image to your WordPress blog, store, or website.

That’s it! If you need more maps, just create them in your Make Me Map account and embed them the same way. All maps are mobile-friendly by default and require no development skills.

Why Not Use a WordPress Plugin?

Using plugins for maps might seem convenient, but there are some downsides:

Plugins often require additional setup and API keys, typically from third-party services like Google Maps. These services can be costly.

Plugins consume extra resources and can slow down your website.

Plugins are less flexible—you can only place maps where the plugin allows. With Make Me Map, you can place your map anywhere: posts, pages, footers, etc.

Some plugins might not be compatible with certain WordPress versions, and you'll need to keep them updated.

Some plugins require visitors to accept a privacy policy before the map is displayed.

At Make Me Map, we aim to make mapping as easy as possible. That’s why you can create and embed a map without any plugins—just copy and paste a line of code or image link.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at hey@makememap.com.
